Homes evacuated after bomb scare in Risca

News | Richard Gurner | Published: 14:50, Tuesday March 4th, 2014.

Residents were evacuated earlier today after a member of the public handed a suspicious package into Risca Police Station, in Tredegar Street.

A 100m cordon was put in place and a bomb disposal squad carried out a controlled explosion.

A Gwent Police spokesperson said: “Following a suspicious item being handed in by a member of the public to officers based at Risca Police Station, the EOD (Explosive Ordnance Disposal) were called to make an assessment.

“A 100m cordon was put in place as a safety precaution and houses within the vicinity were temporarily evacuated whilst it was made safe. The EOD carried out a controlled explosion and the item has now been taken away for examination.

The cordon has been lifted and residents are now able to return to their homes. We are grateful to them for their support and understanding while the incident was ongoing.”
