Paul Mapps has been jailed for life for murdering his friend Ian Davies in Trinant.

Mapps, 27, will serve a minimum of 20 years after stabbing Mr Davies with a kitchen knife on January 11 this year.

He was sentenced at Cardiff Crown Court today, August 6, where he was found guilty of murder by a majority verdict on July 29.

The court heard during the trial how Mapps told police he had consumed a cocktail of drugs before killing Mr Davies, days after holding a knife to his throat in the street.

After the guilty verdict Gwent Police Detective Chief Inspector Richard Williams said: “Since Ian’s death Paul Mapps has sought to absolve himself of any responsibility by first claiming someone else was responsible, and when this was disproved, claiming he was acting in self-defence.

“His attempts to deceive the Court have failed and I hope the verdict brings the family some closure.”
