Man and ex-wife jailed for sexually abusing children

News | Richard Gurner | Published: 12:25, Saturday August 9th, 2014.

A man and his ex-wife have been jailed for 19 years and six years respectively for sexual offences against their children and grandchildren.

The 56-year-old man and 45-year-old woman from Caerphilly County Borough, who cannot be named for legal reasons, were sentenced at Cardiff Crown Court on Friday August 8.

The man was found guilty of 15 counts of sexual offences after a six-week trial.

His ex-wife also denied the charges against her and was found guilty of three sexual offences.

The abuse happened in the Merthyr Tydfil and Caerphilly areas and began in the 1990s. It continued until the pair were arrested last year as part of Operation Swan.

Gwent Police launched the operation after one of the victims, who is now a adult, was arrested for carrying out sexual abuse himself.

During his confession to police, he told officers that his father had abused him, prompting an investigation.

He had originally made a complaint in the 1990s while a boy, but no charges were brought against the father.

The couple were known to social services and the children were on the at risk register.

The couple were cleared of rape and other charges at trial and a second man, who faced one charge of indecent assault, was also acquitted.

The pair were ordered to sign the sex offenders register. The man has also been banned from contacting his victims.

It’s good to see jail sentences accurately reported and not as an irrelevant total.
