Former Wales and British and Irish Lions rugby star Gareth Thomas has swapped his boots for the classroom in a bid to help children’s communication skills.

Gareth Thomas, who captained Wales in both codes of the sport, recently took over English lessons at Bedwas High School.

Working with teacher recruitment agency Prospero Teaching, Mr Thomas – whose nickname is Alfie – delivered media training for three Year 11 classes, teaching communication skills.

The session inspired the youngsters to realise how important it is to be able to communicate effectively throughout life.

The pupils are due to take their GCSEs next year.

Mr Thomas, who was capped 100 times for Wales in rugby union, said: “I felt inspired to help young people to learn what I would consider an essential life skill.

“I want the youngsters to understand that communications skills are so vitally important to progress both on a professional and personal level.

“I can draw from my own experiences with the media and help people learn from my mistakes.”
