An Abercarn couple became some of the first people to celebrate the legalisation of same-sex marriage by taking their vows on the day the law changed.

Mark and Ian Faulkner converted their civil partnership into marriage at Caerphilly County Borough Council Register Office on December 10.

The couple, together for 20 years, were joined by friends and family at their wedding, after becoming civil partners eight years ago.

Mark Faulkner said:  “We feel that this makes everything right. For our family and friends to recognise us as a married couple is fantastic. We certainly didn’t think this would be possible in our lifetime and we are thrilled.”

Cabinet Member For Community & Leisure Services, Cllr Dave Poole, said: “We have had a full house in the register office today with six couples booked in to convert their civil partnership to marriage.

“I am so pleased that the outdated laws have changed and we were able to celebrate with so many happy couples making the official change today.”
