Children from Ysgol Gymraeg Bro Allta in Ystrad Mynach have each given a toy they no longer play with to the British Red Cross’ Refugee Service in South Wales.
The act of kindness came about after the charity’s Education and Engagement team visited the school to talk to the young people about the work of the Red Cross.
Ysgol Gymraeg Bro Allta has selected the Red Cross as their charity of the year and after hearing about the inspiring work of the organisation the school decided to take their support one step further.
Cara Saunders, service manager for Education and Engagement at the Red Cross explained: “The children decided that they would like to help other children through our Refugee Service. Each child gave up one toy they no longer wanted and donated it to us so we could pass them onto young refugees living in Cardiff and Newport.
“The children of Ysgol Gymraeg Bro Allta should feel very proud of themselves. This is a wonderful example of how young people can be true humanitarians and really make a difference to someone’s life.”
Delyth Williams, headteacher at Ysgol Gymraeg Bro Allta said: “Pupils and parents alike have made an excellent contribution towards this worthwhile cause. In addition to the toys donated, we also collected a sum of £400 towards the fantastic work that the British Red Cross do around the world at our recent school concerts. I would personally like to thank and congratulate all of the pupils who took part.”
The Red Cross Refugee Service destitution project helps refugees and asylum seekers access essential services and adapt to their new life in Wales. Sacks of cuddly toys, board games, books and colouring pens will now be distributed to families who often arrive in South Wales with very few possessions.
Theresa Mgadzah Jones, coordinator of the Refugee Service, said: “The refugee children will be very happy to receive these toys as will their parents. The parents will be very happy that their children will have something to play with, and it is especially fitting at this time of year. Thank you so much Bro Allta.”
“…helps refugees and asylum seekers access essential services and adapt to their new life in Wales.”
Does anyone else see a sense of irony here? Some of the people who complain about too much unskilled immigration (usually asylum seekers and refugees) could be the same people who are donating to a cause they do not fully understand. It’s also a way to indoctrinate children into thinking in a certian way before they are capable of thinking for themselves.
