The deputy leader of Caerphilly County Borough Council has said he will stand down as a councillor if he is elected the MP for Merthyr Tydfil and Rhymney.

Cllr Gerald Jones, who represents the New Tredegar ward, has been selected as the Labour candidate for the seat at next year’s General Election.

Current Labour MP Dai Havard has announced he will stand down from contesting the constituency he has held since 2001.

At the 2010 election, Mr Havard took 43.7% of the vote.

Cllr Jones said: “I’m immensely proud to have been selected by my colleagues within the Labour Party to represent my home constituency.

“New Tredegar is part of the Merthyr Tydfil and Rhymney constituency and I was born and raised in the constituency.”

Cllr Jones said there would be “no justification” for him remaining a councillor if he wins the seat.

He added: “It’s physically impossible to carry out two roles. If I were elected, then clearly I would need to stand down as a councillor.

“There’s no justification. I can’t be in two places at once.”
