A deliberate barn fire at a farm has left dozens of animals dead.

Two cats, two dogs, a pig, 55 chickens, three geese and a cockerel all died in the fire at Groeswen near Caerphilly.

A fire crew from Caerphilly attended Mynydd Mayo Farm Groeswen at 1.51pm on Sunday.

Farmer Julian Fabian, 74, told Wales Online that he thought diesel was poured over the building before it was set alight.

Mr Fabian, who is from Penpedairheol and has rented the farm building for 14 years, said: “When I went there on Sunday morning, the place was totally burnt and the fire had gone out.

“I couldn’t do anything, I just started looking for any of the animals.”

A Jack Russell dog and two cats managed to survive the blaze.

South Wales Police said they were investigating the blaze.

Police are appealing to anyone with information to contact them on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111 quoting number 1400481138.
