A charity shop and café will be demolished after they were both damaged by a major fire in Newbridge.

South Wales Fire and Rescue Service were called at 12.25pm on Wednesday to reports that a commercial premises on the town’s High Street, measuring around 40 metres by 60 metres was alight.

The building houses the St David’s Hospice charity shop and the Station Coffee Shop and is next to the Tabernacle Baptist Church.

Following a structural review by Caerphilly County Borough Council, the fire-damaged premises, which are privately-owned, will be demolished.

Work to knock the condemned building down is set to begin today, the council has confirmed, with High Street remaining closed.

A spokeswoman for Caerphilly County Borough Council said: “It is hoped that works will be completed on Monday February 16 and that the High Street will be able to reopen shortly after.

“In the meantime, a diversion route will remain in place. The council would like to reinforce that while the road is currently closed to traffic, pedestrian access is available and the town remains very much open for business as usual.”

Crews from Aberbargoed, Risca, Caerphilly, Maindee, and New Inn were called to tackle Wednesday’s blaze, with a total of 36 firefighters and officers at the scene at the height of the fire.

A spokesman for South Wales Fire and Rescue Service said the cause of the fire was accidental.
