Newbridge High Street has been reopened following the demolition of a building badly damaged in a major fire last week.

South Wales Fire and Rescue Service were called at 12.25pm on Wednesday February 11 to reports that a commercial premises on the town’s High Street, measuring around 40 metres by 60 metres was alight.

The building housed the St David’s Hospice charity shop and the Station Coffee Shop and was next to the Tabernacle Baptist Church.

Following a structural review by Caerphilly County Borough Council, the fire-damaged building was demolished over the weekend.

Crews from Aberbargoed, Risca, Caerphilly, Maindee, and New Inn were called to tackle Wednesday’s blaze, with a total of 36 firefighters and officers at the scene at the height of the accidental fire.

A spokeswoman for Caerphilly County Borough Council said: “The High Street in Newbridge has reopened following the demolition of two fire damaged properties, and our Passenger Transport team are working with operators to resume normal bus services as soon as possible today.

“The council would like to thank residents for their patience and cooperation while the works were carried out.”
