Velothon Wales cycle race to cause ‘major disruption’ to Caerphilly County Borough

News | | Published: 14:23, Friday April 10th, 2015.

A massive cycle race will pass through Caerphilly County Borough on Sunday June 14, leading to road closures of up to nine hours.

More than 15,000 cyclist’s will take part in the Welsh government promoted Velothon Wales, that requires all roads along the route to be closed.

The race will consist of two different routes, one 50km and one 140km, both of which pass through significant parts of the county borough.

The main route enters the county borough at Hafodyrynys and then follows the A472 before proceeding up the Newbridge bypass, through Maesycwmmer, along the A469 Llanbradach bypass to the Cedar Tree roundabout, along the A468 to Bedwas Bridge roundabout, into Caerphilly town centre along Bedwas Road and then up through the town and over Caerphilly Mountain to Cardiff.

Caerphilly County Borough Council is consulting with the public as the scale of the proposed closures could cause “significant disruption” to residents and businesses.

If you have any observations or comments about the proposed road closures you can submit your views in writing by Friday April 24 to Communications Unit, Penallta House, Tredeomen Business Park, Hengoed, CF82 7PG or alternatively you can email communicationsunit@caerphilly.gov.uk,

Detailed traffic plans showing the full route through the county borough are available on the council’s website.

Which bright person has agreed to shut off access to Caerphilly for 9 hrs.I bet they don’t actually live here. The roads are bad enough now without stupid ideas like this. what about the people who have to get to work also what about the businesses that inside this area. there are enough routes that could of been used. How do disabled people have access to their properties or are they housebound for the day. I suppose the only good thing that will come out of this is that all the pot holes on these roads will suddenly be repaired

Yep…Only time roads are fixed……..Area around Barclays Bank and outside tesco is a nightmare for cars parking illegally,so that might be cleared for a day so the lowered kerb can be used by wheelchair users….One advantage i guess

Communicate what you like to Caerphilly CBC events unit, it is as
positive as night follows day that this event will proceed. The reason
for this is that there is very little or no interest in properly and
meaningfully consulting the residents of the borough.

The main reason for this lack of proper consultation with the public is that
officers of the council consider that if they consult sycophantic Ward
Councillors, and back slap each other during the process, then they feel
the have done enough `consulting`. to satisfy the democratic need to
    consult at all.

All would be better if the Ward Councillors involved, ( There are some notable exceptions) actually knew how to network the relevant information, which is important, on to residents who are effected by road closures etc, for both this and lots of other regular `events` in the borough.

Officers of the ouncil will make all and every attempt NOT to consult Residents Face to Face on this or any other subject effecting them, is it probably a lack
of personal confidence or lack of professional ability which causes
this, and therefore the discontent of residents?. Or, could it be that THE COUNCIL (elected members) are content to oversee this total lack of proper and meaningful consultation, and it is not the fault of officers at all that it does not take place?

Those living in wards where they have Councillors who are prepared to consult
their constituents, these matters of `discontent` can largely be diminished, and probably engender more popularity and support for what the Council do to promote the Borough to the rest of Wales

Wow, no cars on the roads for a day. What an amazing idea, they should have car free days more often in my opinion. At least my children will be able to walk the streets without being poisoned by exhaust fumes for 1 day.
All the selfish motorists need to realise that driving whilst polluting the air is a priveledge and not a God given right.

This event will be taking place for at least the next 5 years by the way, as agreed by the Welsh Government – good on them I say!
I can hardly wait for the day. I live in Caerphilly town centre and will be out cheering the riders on and breathing in nice clean air for a change.

Of course the iceing on the cake is that the following Sunday Caerphilly hosts the 10k and many roads will be closed for 6 hours on that day as well.
