RSPCA appeal for information after cat poisoned in Senghenydd

News | | Published: 14:39, Monday June 22nd, 2015.

The RSPCA is appealing for information and warning pet owners to be cautious after a cat was poisoned in Senghenydd.

The cat’s owner contacted the RSPCA after her cat was poisoned on June 11 in the area of Phillips Terrace.

RSPCA inspector Sophie Daniels said: “The cat went outside for around five minutes and ran back into the house five minutes later. The cat was soaking wet, choking and spluttering and became very subdued.

“Sadly the cat was put to sleep on veterinary advice.

“Tests showed that the cat died from acute renal failure. Tragically the caller said she also had two cats poisoned last year.”

It is unknown if this incident was deliberate or an accident, so an appeal for information has been launched.

Inspector Daniels added: “We are appealing for information about this incident and also would like to remind pet owners to be vigilant and keep an eye on their cats’ well being.

“If you suspect that your cat has been poisoned you must take it to a vet immediately. If possible, you should take a sample of what the cat has eaten/drunk, or the container.”

Poisoning a cat deliberately is a criminal offence. Under the Animal Welfare Act 2006, the maximum penalty for those found guilty of this offence is up to six months imprisonment and/or a fine of up to £20,000.

If anyone has any information about this incident or similar incidents in the area, they can contact the RSPCA inspector information line on 0300 123 8018. Calls will be treated in confidence.
