Pontllanfraith builder pays £10,000 to victim of his unsafe work

News | | Published: 15:00, Tuesday September 22nd, 2015.

A builder has been ordered to pay more than £10,000 compensation for his unsafe work.

Scott McBeth, 40, of Meadow Road, Pontllanfraith, appeared at Cardiff Crown Court on Tuesday September 8, after an investigation by Torfaen Trading Standards.

The court was told how McBeth, an ex-employee of Safestyle UK who was trading as SM Installations, had carried out work at a property in Cwmbran between September 2013 and March 2014.

He had promised the homeowner a “fantastic conservatory”, for her life savings, but she was left with a “substandard, dangerous conservatory”.

McBeth also failed to provide her with any cancellation rights.

At Cardiff Crown Court he admitted a charge under the Consumer Protection from Unfair Trading Regulations 2008 for carrying out work which contravened the requirements of professional diligence.

McBeth was sentenced to a 24-month community order, ordered to do 200 hours unpaid work, and placed under the probation service for 12 months.

He was also ordered to pay £10,783.71 compensation to his victim, prosecution costs of £1,000 and a £60 victim surcharge.
