A Caerphilly town boxing legend who received a British Empire Medal in The Queen’s Birthday Honours last year has had a special ale brewed in his honour by Brains.
Don Braithwaite, pictured above with wife Margaret, was visibly moved and overwhelmed when friends and relatives packed out the town’s Pontygwindy pub to throw him a surprise 80th birthday party, on February 20, and presented him with the beer.
Mr Braithwaite, a bronze medallist at the 1958 Empire Games, still coaches youngsters at the All Saints Boxing Club in Virginia Park.
Son Wayne paid tribute to his father for his “phenomenal” achievements.
