A much-loved children’s centre in Caerphilly has celebrated its 25th anniversary.

Caerphilly Children’s Centre is co-run by charity Action for Children and local bodies, and provides care and support to over 800 disabled children and young people across Caerphilly County Borough.

Since opening in 1991, the centre has provided emotional and practical support, and helped young people develop skills, as well as offering a range of services such as physiotherapy, hydrotherapy, orthotic clinics, occupational therapy, speech and language therapy, dietetics and a home advisory service.

Tim Horton, Action for Children’s service coordinator at the centre said: “It’s been wonderful celebrating this landmark anniversary with so many friends, old and new, who have contributed so much to our success.

“Prior to the centre opening in 1991, the families of disabled children had to travel outside the area, even to obtain a basic and very limited range of services.

“We originally provided a specialist nursery with a small amount of therapy support but over the course of 25 years we have expanded hugely, both in buildings and numbers of staff, to where we are today, as a true multi-agency setting often referred to as a flagship for others who have followed.”

Judith Kirkby, children’s services manager at Caerphilly Children’s Centre added: “We are so proud of all we’ve achieved in 25 years and it’s only right we celebrate in style.

“We will be celebrating again later in the summer with the children and families we work with as they are at the centre of all we do.

“We have achieved so much already and we are working tirelessly to provide the best services we can for those children, young and their families who need it most in our communities.”
