A cyclist from Caerphilly is signing off the year in style after winning a Welsh Cycling award.

The 2016 Welsh Cycling Awards were held at the Mercure Holland House in Cardiff on Saturday October 29, where eight awards were presented for categories ranging from volunteer of the year, club of the year, coach of the year, and the lifetime contribution to cycling awards.

The ceremony celebrated the successes of Welsh cyclists on the world stage, as well as the achievements and dedication of volunteers, clubs and coaches at home in Wales.

Chris Corbett, of Caerphilly Cycling Club, scooped the Club Cyclist of the Year award having returned to cycling 12 months ago.

As well as reaching his goals on the bike, Chris led beginner rides and coached the Kids Club at Caerphilly CC, seeing off fellow nominees from Cardiff Ajax CC and Action Bikes CC to win the prize.

Elsewhere, Caerphilly CC had to be content with a runners-up position in the Club of the Year category, as Bynea Cycling Club, based in Carmarthenshire, took the honour.

The evening was rounded off with a questions and answer session with extreme environment athlete Richard Parks, and elite cyclists Ciara Horne, Scott Davies and Caerphilly-born Manon Carpenter.

Anne Adams-King, Chief Executive Officer at Welsh Cycling said: “We have had a phenomenal year at Welsh Cycling. We had six Welsh riders attend the Rio 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games, bringing back four medals. But it’s back here in Wales we have seen an impact.

“We have more than 165 cycling clubs, delivering opportunities for people of all ages and abilities to take part in cycling. We are privileged in Wales to have such a vibrant group of people supporting cycling, from ride leaders to coaches, race organiser to marshals. I thank each and every volunteer for helping to inspire Wales to cycle.”
