Police are investigating the possibility that a woman found in a “distressed” state on a housing estate in the early hours of Saturday morning may have been sexually assaulted.

In the early hours of Saturday, May 20, between 12.45am and 1.10am, Gwent Police said it received reports of a distressed woman in the Mornington Meadows area, specifically the Dol Fran and Pen-Y-Cae streets.

According to residents, officers later searched bins and undergrowth for clothing and other possessions missing from the woman.

Gwent Police said the woman, aged around 30, may have been in the area from about 10pm on Friday, May 19, and have appealed for people to come forward if they have any information.

The woman is described as white with long, straight, brown hair. She was wearing a black cardigan/top, pink miniskirt, black leggings and long black boots.

She was carrying a large black leatherette bag, the size of a holdall with a metal and leather shoulder strap. The bag contained her keys, with a fob, and her black leather purse containing cash and her driving licence.

The holdall and its contents, together with the pink miniskirt, black cardigan and a black bra are missing.

A police spokeswoman said the woman was now safe and working with officers to establish what exactly happened.

Asked about the possibility that officers are investigating a sexual assault, a Gwent Police spokeswoman said: “That is not confirmed but it is one of a number of possible lines of enquiry. At this stage we are still working to establish the exact circumstances and events.”
