Three good causes are celebrating after receiving a total of £6,000 in donations raised at last year’s Caerphilly town firework display.

Plaid Cymru town councillor and Town Mayor Simon Morgan handed over a £2,750 donation to local charity Popsy – a support group for parents and carers of youngsters who are blind, have special needs and with life-limiting conditions.

Also benefiting was the Parkinson’s Disease Society with £2,750, while £500 was presented to Caerffili Lions Club.

Cllr Morgan paid tribute to local fundraisers, Caerphilly Town councillors and the Lions as well as the volunteers who counted the money.

He said: “These funds will make a difference and that is what counts. A big thank-you also to the generosity of the people of Caerphilly and beyond.”

People do give generously but readers should be aware that the firework display costs more than twice the money donated to charity. Also the final amount given to good causes includes a generous contribution from the Town Council budget. I quite like the annual firework display but as a fund raising event it is a flop.
