Town council to fund annual Caerphilly in Bloom display

Caerphilly Town Council has stepped in to ensure the annual Caerphilly in Bloom display, which sees flowers brighten up the town, is maintained after the county council withdrew its support.

Plaid Cymru councillors, who control the town council, will regularly check the flowers during the summer and ensure they are maintained in a good condition, with spending increased from £8,800 to £11,150.

An extra six baskets are being added around the bus and railway station to improve first impressions for travellers and visitors.

Three tiered troughs are also being reinstated outside the Twyn Community Centre.

Town Mayor Councillor Simon Morgan said: “Every summer the town centre is livened up with bright flowers making it a much more pleasant environment for local shoppers and visitors alike.

“Fortunately, the Plaid-run town council has been able to take up the extra financial burden. Councillors have committed themselves to ensuring the flowers look good throughout the summer.”

St Martin’s Plaid Cymru councillor James Fussell added: “The annual Flower Festival and Caerphilly in Bloom are both organised by the town council.

“In 2010 we were proud when we won the silver in the Wales in Bloom competition.

“We are confident that events such as these,as well as the annual fireworks and Christmas lights organised by the town council, help to increase the number of people visiting the town centre and thus increase business for local traders.”

You may not know this but Caerffili Town Council decided, last year, to use onliine banking to give to good causes. This has already resulted in the loss of nearly £2,700 of our money being paid into what the council describes as ‘a bogus account.’ Apparently, reading the minutes, the council has decided to’write off’ this money. They would not have done this without a battle royal when I was an elected member.
