Two fundraising events for cancer charities have been organised following the breast cancer diagnosis and treatment of Cefn Hengoed resident Lyn Cushing.
Lyn was diagnosed with breast cancer in August 2017 and has had six sessions of chemotherapy at the Macmillan Cancer Centre in the Prince Charles Hospital, Merthyr Tydfil.
The 65-year-old mother recently had surgery at Nevil Hall Hospital, Abergavenny, and Lyn will also be having a course of radiotherapy at Velindre Cancer Hospital, Cardiff.
The cancer fundraiser is from 6.30pm until 1am on April 6 at Bryn Meadows Golf and Spa Hotel in Maesycwmmer, in support of Velindre Cancer Centre, Cardiff.
Tickets are £25 and include a hog roast, dessert, the finals of the Valleys Got Talent competition and a performance from Lyn’s choir, the Melody Makers.
Lyn said: “There will also be an auction and the whole evening has been organised by my daughter, Claire Seaborne, and Mark Burton.
“The reason Claire has organised this is to thank Velindre for the care they have given not just to myself but the many number of people who they see every day of the year to allow them to get through a very difficult time.
“Although this has been an extremely difficult time for me, my love of singing with my wonderful choir and the friends I have made have kept me going.”
A fundraising concert has already been held at Lewis Girls’ School in Ystrad Mynach on March 27 and raised much needed funds for Macmillan Cancer Support.
Lyn performed with her own choir, the Melody Makers, which she founded in June 2010. Other acts included the Aber Valley Male Voice Choir, Lewis Girls’ School Choir and the BTM Brass Band.
Lyn is very busy with her music but also has time to be the secretary of Blackwood-based Rhymney Valley Athletics Club.
She added: “I have a passion for athletics and I helped relaunch Rhymney Valley with the help and support of many others, including Sport Caerphilly. We had just 24 athletes when we started but now have a thriving competing club with 240 athletes between the ages of four and 17.
