A woman has been handed a six-month community order for the way she treated her pet cat.
Eleanore Catherine Rhiannon Jenkins, who kept several cats at her home in Upper High Street, Rhymney, was visited by the RSPCA, who found one of the animals in an “horrendous condition”.
The left eye of tabby cat Mischief was partially closed due to pus and discharge. Jenkins had not sought out a vet for the male cat and the RSPCA decided to prosecute.
Jenkins, aged 46, who now lives in Ash Crescent, Merthyr Tydfil, admitted two Animal Welfare Act offences. This included causing Mischief to suffer unnecessarily and she was sentenced on Wednesday, March 21, at Merthyr Tydfil Magistrates’ Court.
She was given a six-month community order with 40 hours of unpaid work and a deprivation order for the cat, in addition to being ordered to pay £300 in costs and an £85 victim surcharge.
Two other cats were also removed from the property due to their condition.
Mischief has made a full recovery from his ordeal, following rehabilitation and support from the RSPCA.
Izzi Hignell, an inspector with the animal welfare charity, said: “This case acts as a timely reminder as to the importance of ensuring – where required – that pets are given appropriate veterinary treatment.”
