Glamping comes to Rudry

News | | Published: 17:00, Tuesday May 15th, 2018.

Pen Y Waun farm near Rudry has launched a glamping alternative to nights lying on the floor and worrying about your groundsheet.

Lydia and Richard Watts decided to branch out from dairy and beef farming after their herd was hit by TB last year.

The couple lost 40 animals in the outbreak and are also beginning to rebuild the farming side of the business with 20 dairy cows and more than 80 beef cattle.

They came up with the idea for Under the Oak Glamping and used the services of Farming Connect, which is part of Business Wales, to carry out a diversification study.

“They looked at different options but thought our glamping idea was a good one as we are the only site in Caerphilly offering this sort of luxury.

“We have installed a luxury safari-style lodge with proper beds, kitchen and bathroom and with a log-burning stove for heating,” Lydia said.

“It’s a big investment and leap of faith for us but we felt we needed to invest to do it properly, as lots of people are getting into glamping and we wanted to stand out from the crowd.”

Great to see camping venues locally though I must admit I enjoy proper camping and my groundsheet has never caused me any concern!
