Wales’ Teacher of the Year
A second teacher from Caerphilly has been nominated for Teacher of the Year the Professional Teaching Awards Cymru.
Hannah Hopkins, who teaches at Pontarddulais Comprehensive School near Swansea, has been nominated for her passion for teaching and her work in developing colleagues, making her pupils feel valued, and for her impact on the wider curriculum where she is influencing teaching in secondary schools across Wales.
Andrew Owens, assistant headteacher at Pontarddulais Comprehensive School, said: “We’re very fortunate to have Hannah in our school here and I am sure that she would be an asset to any school.
“She’s an absolutely fantastic teacher and has exceptional relationships with the pupils and she cares so much for them – no matter who they are.
“Hannah has got this way with the pupils in that she’s so passionate that she wants them to succeed, the very best that they can.”
Mrs Hopkins’ nomination for Teacher of the Year follows that of Ysgol Gymraeg Caerffili’s deputy head Carol Hesden.
The Professional Teaching Awards Cymru are in their second year and were created to celebrate the commitment, dedication and hard work of education professionals across Wales.
Nominations were received from parents, students, colleagues and employers.
Winners will be announced at a special ceremony at Hensol Castle on Sunday, May 13.
Education Secretary Kirsty Williams AM said: “The calibre of nominations we had this year for the Professional Teaching Awards Cymru was absolutely phenomenal.
“The finalists are a credit to the profession. They should all be exceptionally proud of themselves and I am very much looking forward to meeting them.”
