Pupils and staff from Lewis School Pengam recently welcomed back boxer Kyran Jones, who is a former pupil.

WABA middleweight champion Kyran has recently returned from representing Wales at the Commonwealth Games in Australia, where he narrowly lost out to three-times Commonwealth Games competitor Steven Donnelly of Northern Ireland.

Kyran displayed his skills for the school, as well as ‘sparring’ with head of the lower school, Darren Berry.

Gareth Richards, head of PE at Lewis School Pengam, said: “It was a great pleasure for us to welcome back one of our finest-ever athletes.

“We are now hoping to watch Kyran in the Olympics in two years.”

Cllr Philippa Marsden, Cabinet Member for Education and Achievement said: “[Kyran’s visit to his former school] has shown the pupils that with hard work and dedication they can be very successful.”
