Building named in honour of former mayor

A new extension at Newbridge School has been officially opened  – by the man the new building is named after.

The Michael Gray Building had its ribbon cut by former councillor Michael Gray, who is the school’s chair of governors.

Mr Gray stepped down as a Labour councillor at the 2015 local elections after 30 years representing the Cross Keys ward. He was a councillor first for Islwyn Borough Council and then its successor Caerphilly County Borough Council, following the merger with Rhymney Valley District Council in 1996. Mr Gray served as Mayor of both Islwyn and Caerphilly.

Current Mayor of Caerphilly County Borough, Cllr Michael Adams, opened the new energy efficient building on Friday, November 23.

Lesley Perry, headteacher of Newbridge School, said: “[The extension] is an investment in the future of education in the area which will enable us to continue inspiring the young people of Newbridge and the wider area to succeed and excel. The building provides wonderful modern facilities for us that add to our existing learning areas.”

The building has been jointly funded by Welsh Government and Caerphilly County Borough Council as part of the Welsh Government’s 21st Century Schools programme.
