A 30-year-old man from the Caerphilly area has been charged with causing death by dangerous driving after a fatal car crash in Hengoed.

Lee Hillier has also been charged with two counts of causing serious injury by dangerous driving and appeared before Newport Magistrates’ Court today, Monday, January 14.

The crash, between a black Seat Leon and a grey Volkswagen Crafter van, happened at around 8.30pm on Friday, January 11, on New Road near the viaduct.

The Welsh Ambulance Service, South Wales Fire Service and the police attended the scene.

Police said the male passenger in the Seat, a 43-year-old man from the Fleur-De-Lis area, was pronounced dead at the scene.

He has since been named as Jason Clarke. In a post on Facebook, Mr Clarke’s family paid tribute to him.

The driver of the Seat, and two further passengers, were taken to hospital – none are believed to have serious injuries.

Police said the driver of the Volkswagen Crafter van was uninjured.

Officers have asked any motorists using the road between 8.15pm and 8.30pm to check if they have any dash cam footage.
