A lantern parade will take place at Parc Penallta for Earth Hour

A lantern parade will take place at Parc Penallta, Ystrad Mynach on Saturday, March 30 to mark Earth Hour.

The parade will happen between 6.45pm and 8.30pm and has been organised by community arts organisation Head4Arts, who cover South East Wales.

There will also be live music at the event, which follows on from events taking place in Tredegar, Blaenavon and Merthyr Tydfil earlier in the day.

People will be able to write pledges on origami crane birds, which will be made during the event at Parc Penallta.

Head4Arts manager Kate Strudwick said: “In Japan, the crane is a mystical creature and is believed to live for a thousand years.

Traditionally, it was believed that if one folded 1,000 origami cranes, one’s wish would come true. It has become a symbol of hope and healing during challenging times.”

Earth Hour, which will take place between 8.30pm and 9.30pm, is a WWF initiative which encourages people to switch off their lights.

This year will be the tenth time Earth Hour has run in Wales.
