Cross Keys suffer bruising defeat to Llanelli

Cross Keys were well beaten against fellow Principality Premiership strugglers Llanelli on Saturday, March 23.

Llanelli earned a 53-12 win at Parc-y-Scarlets to deal Cross Keys a major blow in their efforts to avoid relegation.

Daniel Babos and Iwan Burgwin scored tries for the Keys as nine-try Llanelli breezed to a bonus-point victory.

Llanelli’s Simon Gardiner opened the scoring and Declan Smith scored twice early on.

Rhys Fawcett secured Llanelli’s bonus point with their fourth try. Smith’s conversion made it 24-0.

Babos then scored the visitors’ first try, with Carwyn Penny converting to keep them within touching distance.

But Llanelli responded through a hat-trick from centre Ryan Davies to put themselves firmly in the driving seat.

Leon Randell scored the eighth try, which was converted by Ioan Hughes to increase the lead to 46-7.

Burgwin crossed over for the Keys’ second try but it was little more than a consolation.

Joel James scored Llanelli’s ninth try and Ioan Hughes’ conversion sealed a resounding 53-12 win to send a message to their relegation rivals.

Cross Keys remain 14th in the league on 34 points, with seven games left to play.

The Keys return to action on Saturday, March 30, when they welcome league leaders Merthyr to Pandy Park.
