A new community garden area could be coming to Wyllie.
Professional gardener Stephen Calway bought a 14-acre site for £21,000 at auction and is hoping to turn a large portion of the land into an area that will benefit the local community.
Mr Calway would eventually like to see allotments, gardens, benches and pathways on the land, much of which is overgrown and near a cycle path.
Mr Calway told Caerphilly Observer: “I want the land to be a community resource. There’s nothing in Wyllie.
“The main concern is that the land could have been used for houses, which is not what we want.”
He added: “Eventually we’d like a pond there, it would be good to get people interested and using the land.
“We want to start small and grow bigger. We can extend the community garden area as more people want to get involved and show an interest.”
Currently, a small group of volunteers are helping to clear the area and have started planting hedges, but Mr Calway is hoping to get together a small committee group to plan the project.
Mr Calway, who is originally from Bristol, moved to Pontywaun with his wife, Regina, three years ago and is currently doing a diploma in Social and Therapeutic Horticulture.
He said: “It’s been a dream of ours for a number of years to do something like this.”
Mr Calway will be holding a meeting at the Islwyn Inn in Wyllie on Friday, April 12 to give residents the chance to give their suggestions on how the land should be used.
The meeting will start at 6pm but as there is only room for 16 people, Mr Calway is inviting people to email their suggestions.
