Ashley Barnes will serve 14 months in prison

A Graig-y-Rhacca man has been jailed for attacking a police officer and dangerous driving.

Ashley Barnes, 30, from Grays Gardens, was sentenced to a total of 14 months at Cardiff Crown Court after admitting dangerous driving, criminal damage and grievous bodily harm.

At a hearing on March 25, the court was told how Barnes was caught riding a 250cc motorcycle in a dangerous manner on Heol Aneurin in Penyrheol.

At the time time of the offence, on February 23, Barnes also assaulted a police officer and caused damage to a Ford Focus car.

For dangerous driving he was sentenced to 14 months, for the assault he got six months and for the criminal damage he got four weeks. Barnes will serve the sentences at the same time.

PC Martyn Newman, of Gwent Police, said: “The offender in this case assaulted a police officer on duty, without any provocation or reason other than the uniform he wore. Assaults on any emergency workers will not be tolerated, under any circumstances.

“He was identified, pursued and arrested swiftly by police working with the support of the community, and handed the maximum possible sentence by the courts.”
