A primary school in Rhymney has been awarded a trophy for their efforts at the Urdd Eisteddfod, where they were the highest scoring school for Welsh learners.
Upper Rhymney Primary School pupils took part in a number of competitions at the event, which was held at the end of May and is one of Europe’s largest youth touring festivals.
Pupils won a host of first and second place prizes, including a silver medal for their Can Actol performance on stage at the Millennium Centre, which was shown live on S4C.
They also appeared on ITV Wales news discussing what they enjoy about learning Welsh.
The school held a special presentation assembly on Monday, July 1, where pupils were presented with their silver medals.
Deputy Headteacher and Welsh Lead, Jane Andrews, said: “Taking part in the Urdd Eisteddfod has been a fantastic opportunity for us to showcase the talented and bright pupils we have in Upper Rhymney Primary School. I couldn’t be more proud of both the pupils and staff who have worked so hard to prepare for the competitions.”
Headteacher Samantha King said: “I’m incredibly proud of Jane Andrews, Charmayne Jones and our amazing children for all their work with the Eisteddfod and the support we get from the families.
“We compete every year, extending our repertoire and expanding our skills and talents. It’s fantastic for the children to finally have the recognition with a medal.”
Cllr Philippa Marsden, the council’s Cabinet Member for Education and Achievement, presented the pupils with their medals and said: “I would like to extend my congratulations to Upper Rhymney Primary School for their sterling efforts competing in the Urdd Eisteddfod. They have enjoyed huge success.”
