A fundraising event at Caerphilly rugby club has raised more than £3,200 for mental health charity, Mind.

The event, held on Saturday, September 21, was organised in memory of Rowena Cotterell, who passed away earlier this year.

More than 120 tickets were sold at £10 each, with all proceeds going to charity.

A raffle was also held, with prizes such as restaurant vouchers, hair salon vouchers, wine, gin and champagne up for grabs.

The prizes were donated by residents and local businesses, including Castle Gate Indian restaurant, Casa Mia, Captiva Spa, Salon Rouge, Cosmic Discos and Karaoke, Edwards, Asda Caerphilly, Cracked Actors, The Salon, Hawthorn Leisure Centre and the Green Lady pub.

Sara Bodman, who organised the event alongside Toni Alexander, Janine Davies, Jenny Williams, Cath Whittle and Carla Crosbie, thanked local businesses and the community for their support.

Ms Bodman said: “Special thanks to Tina Sparkle and the band The Guardians of Public Morality for performing on the night, Caerphilly rugby club for giving us use of the venue with no charge and Jason, Rowena’s husband, who donated a large number of prizes.

“Obviously a big, big thank you to everyone who bought raffle tickets, donated and came on the night for such a cause.”

Caerphilly town mayor, Cllr Mike Prew, attended the event and gave a speech, as well as drawing the raffle.

Lucy Lloyd, senior community fundraiser at Mind Cymru, said: “We’re very grateful to Toni and her friends for raising a fantastic £3,298 for us, while at the same time raising awareness of mental health problems and remembering Rowena.”

“One in four of us will experience a mental health problem in any given year, and it’s vitally important that we open up and talk about how we’re feeling. The money raised by Toni and her friends will help us to keep providing help and support for everyone with a mental health problem in Wales and we are truly grateful for their amazing work.”
