Two men have been jailed for nine years each after assaulting and robbing an elderly man as he got off a bus in Lower Graig y Rhacca.

Steven Soal, 32 and Joshua Soal, 25, both pleaded guilty to robbery at Newport Crown Court on Tuesday, October 1.

The pair were also ordered to pay victim surcharges of £170 each upon their release.

The victim had not long got off the Stagecoach 50 bus from Caerphilly town centre on May 20 when he was attacked from behind.

He suffered a fractured eye socket and had his car keys and house keys stolen.

Police Constable Helen Moss, who led on the case, said: “We are very pleased with the sentences that have been given to these two individuals which reflect the serious nature of this crime.

“This was an unprovoked attack and was particularly vicious leaving the victim with significant and long lasting injuries.

“The result at court shows that we will bring those to justice who target the most vulnerable in our communities.”
