No coronavirus quarantine in place at Rhymney school, council confirms

There are no reported cases of coronavirus among teaching staff at a school in Rhymney and no one is in quarantine, Caerphilly County Borough Council has confirmed.

Since the Welsh Government reported the first confirmed case of coronavirus in Wales this morning, social media has been awash with misinformation and rumour that a teacher at Idris Davies 3-18 School has been quarantined.

Worried parents have been posting their frustration at not being informed by the authorities, however we have asked the council what is happening and it has said a quarantine is not in place.

A spokesman for Caerphilly County Borough Council said: “It has been brought to our attention that rumours are circulating on social media suggesting that one of the teachers at the school is ‘in quarantine with coronavirus’.

“We would like to clarify that there are no cases of Coronavirus among any of the teaching staff at the school and no one is in quarantine.”

First confirmed case in Wales is in Swansea

The Chief Medical Officer, Dr Frank Atherton, confirmed the first confirmed case in Wales and it has been reported they are from Swansea.

Dr Atherton said: “All appropriate measures to provide care for the individual and to reduce the risk of transmission to others are being taken.

“I can also confirm that the patient had travelled back to Wales from Northern Italy, where the virus was contracted.

“I’d like to take this opportunity to assure the public that Wales and the whole of the UK is well prepared for these types of incidents. Working with our partners in Wales and the UK, we have implemented our planned response, with robust infection control measures in place to protect the health of the public.”

Aneurin Bevan University Health Board have also been moved to clarify that the Royal Gwent Hospital has not been affected.

We are aware of an inaccurate story circulating this morning regarding the Royal Gwent Hospital and Coronavirus. We can confirm that all of our services including the Emergency Department are open and we would encourage patients who do need to use our services to attend as normal.
