Islwyn MP Chris Evans

The Member of Parliament for Islwyn, Chris Evans, has been appointed to Labour’s front bench by new party leader Keir Starmer.

Mr Evans will serve as the parliamentary private secretary to newly-appointed shadow defence secretary John Healey MP.

The Islwyn MP, who was re-elected in December’s General Election, joins fellow-Caerphilly County Borough MPs Wayne David and Gerald Jones on the opposition front bench.

Meanwhile, former Islwyn MP Lord Touhig has joined Labour’s defence team in the House of Lords.

Mr Evans said: “I am delighted to be joining John and the strong defence team he has put together.

“Islwyn has a proud history of service in our military as well as being home to important defence manufactures.

“I know that up and down the country we are all incredibly grateful for the hard work our service members do, particularly as they work to help in the national effort against coronavirus.”

Mr Evans added: “I know the Labour defence team will be holding the government to account to ensure they are doing justice to our hard-working service men and women.”

Shadow defence secretary Mr Healey said: “I’m delighted to have Chris as part of Labour’s new shadow defence team. His experience in Parliament makes our strong team stronger still.

“Chris will be a big asset for Labour as we speak up on behalf of our armed forces and veterans.”
