Gwent police are appealing for information following an attempted theft of lead from the roof of St Martin’s Church in Caerphilly.

The incident is believed to have occurred at some point between March 25 and April 30 and has caused significant damage to the church’s roof, and water damage within.

Churches across Caerphilly have been closed during this period following social distancing guidance from the Welsh and UK Governments.

A memer of the church’s leadership team told Caerphilly Observer: “It is very sad that this has happened at a time when so many are reaching out to support one another, but we are so grateful for the kindness and support shown by our parishioners and the wider community at this time.”

“Neighbours and friends have been asked to keep a friendly eye out for further issues.  With permission from the Church in Wales, the building work will also now recommence imminently to minimise any further risk.”

Anyone with information relating to the theft can contact Gwent Police on 101 and quote 2000147705 as a crime reference number.
