A cannabis factory with more than 2,000 plants has been discovered at a disused pub in Cwmfelinfach.

The discovery was made after police attended a small fire in the basement of the Pioneer Hotel, on Maindee Road, at around 6pm on Thursday (October 29).

Gwent Police confirmed nobody was injured in the fire, the cause of which is still under investigation.

A police statement said: “In excess of 2,000 plants of varying maturity were located at the premises, as well as hydroponics equipment.”

Inspector Andrew Boucher, of Gwent Police, said: “Officers and our crime scene investigators are making further enquiries at the scene this morning.
