A teaching assistant at a primary school in Caerphilly town has been named as a finalist at the annual Professional Teaching Awards Cymru.

Nerys Todd, who works at Ysgol Gynradd Gymraeg Caerffili, is one of 26 finalists, with the winners set to be announced at a virtual ceremony on Sunday, November 29.

Ms Todd is one of three finalists in contention for the Supporting Teachers and Learners category.

More than 100 nominations were submitted earlier this year by pupils, teaching staff and parents.

A short biography on Ms Todd, released by award organisers, reads: “Nerys has made a significant contribution to the success of the school in recent years and leads on numerous projects that often involve taking the children out of school.

“She is very easy to get along with as a colleague and has proven herself as a leader with pupils and among the staff. There is no doubt about her potential to become a teacher.

“Through her role as an assistant, she is able to spend valuable time with all of the children and allows them to dictate their own learning to achieve the best possible outcomes.

“She teaches kindness and empathy to all pupils.”

The event will be streamed live on facebook.com/educationwales.

Welsh Education Minister Kirsty Williams, said: “It has been an incredibly tough year for parents, pupils and schools across Wales, but the education sector has shown immense resilience.

“It is a privilege to announce these remarkable finalists and to read their stories of hard work and commitment.”

Ms Williams added: “This year, more than ever, the awards are a celebration of the finalists themselves and the schools, teachers and pupils they represent.

“I look forward to celebrating each and every one of you and thank you all for the spirit and perseverance you have shown through this tremendously difficult year.”
