The council has received a petition calling for a review into safety on a busy stretch of road between Blackwood and Cefn Fforest.

The petition, containing 444 names, was handed over to Caerphilly County Borough Council following a number of incidents on Pwllglas Road, Fair View and Bloomfield Road between Pengam and Blackwood.

In recent months, a car has overturned, another left the road, and a person has been hit near the Stonehouse pub.

Emergency services respond to an overturned car on Pwllglas Road.

Cllr Andrew Farina-Childs, who represents the Blackwood ward, told Caerphilly Observer it was only a matter of time before somebody is killed.

He said: “This is an extremely well-used road and junction. Suggestions have been made in relation to traffic calming measures and even the possibility of traffic lights to be installed on the junction.

“I would personally welcome either or both of these safety measures as I believe it could be just a matter of time before a fatality occurs on this road or junction.

“While there is a cost to implement these measures, this is a small price to pay to potentially save someone’s life.”

Cllr Kevin Etheridge, who also represents the Blackwood ward, added: “It is essential that safety measures are put in place to ensure the safety of pedestrians and the large number of pupils working to and from Blackwood Comprehensive School on a daily basis.”

Within the petition, residents suggested a number of safety improvement measures, such as the introduction of traffic lights, traffic calming measures and restrictions on parking.

The petition was delivered to the council on Friday, December 4, with a site visit to be conducted in the new year.
