Caerphilly Sings: Choirs come together virtually to mark St David’s Day

Choirs from across Caerphilly County Borough came together to mark St David’s Day with a live-streamed event.

The event included singalongs of iconic Welsh songs, such as Calon Lân and Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau, as well as Tom Jones hits Delilah and Green Green Grass of Home.

Choir members were asked to record themselves singing at home, with Caerphilly-based social enterprise RecRock merging the recordings together so the singers were in harmony with each other.

The event was organised by arts and wellbeing network Cwtsh, with funding from Aneurin Bevan University Health Board’s Integrated Wellbeing Network, Caerphilly Arts Development Service and community arts organisation Head4Arts.

Calls for support to help choirs survive pandemic

The idea for the St David’s Day celebration came from Nerys Porch of Caerphilly Male Voice Choir.

Dr David Llewellyn, from the Integrated Wellbeing Network, said: “Singing can be hugely important to people’s wellbeing, by feeling involved and being connected, and indeed their health, for example through strengthening lung function.

“We are keen for our choirs to continue to flourish and this fantastic event, sparked by an idea from Caerphilly Male Choir, will hopefully help them get back and running properly before too long.”
