The owner of an independent shop in Gilfach has won the Bestway Wholesale’s Retail Development Award 2019.

Gareth Jones, who runs the JJ’s store on Commerical Street, won the award on Thursday, October 17 at the Marriott Hotel in London.

Mr Jones, who has seen his turnover double after refitting his shop, was also handed a £2,000 prize.

The shop refit, which took place in the summer of 2018, has seen new products hit the shelves, a vaping station fitted, card transaction fees removed and technology introduced to allow customers to pay using their mobile phones.

Paul Adams, head of sales and development at best-one, said: “Gareth has brought some very innovative solutions to his store which sets him apart from other independent retailers and larger multiples within the area.

“As best-one retailers are at the heart of the communities in which they operate, Gareth’s unwavering commitment to serve his community has helped his business thrive. We’re very pleased to be able to present him with this award.”
