Ynysddu Ladies Bowls Club will represent Wales in the British Isles Series next year after unexpectedly taking top spot at a Welsh Over-55s Rinks competition.
Despite an excellent season, where Ynysddu won the South Wales and Monmouthshire County League, team member Heather Collins told Caerphilly Observer how the side had little expectation going into the tournament.
“We were total underdogs. For little old Ynysddu to win this competing against international players was amazing. We won five games in all.
“We’ve had a really good season and created a great atmosphere within the club. Practice is important but having players who want to compete and win is crucial.”
Playing out of Ynysddu Welfare, the team of 16 compete in singles, doubles, triples and teams of four.
Collins, who played alongside team mates Jean Kimberley, Jackie Jones and Terrine Lane, said: “Unfortunately, bowls is generally a dying sport. We lost Abertridwr and Pontymister last season which was sad.
“Here at the club things are on the up however. We’ve already added four players to the team and a bunch of women from Ynysddu rugby club came down to have a go on Wednesday.”
The British Isles Series is being held in Ireland next June.
Collins added: “We’ll be competing against the best in the world. There is a lot of excitement but also nerves.
“It’s such a great sport however. We’d encourage anyone to come and have a go.”
