Farmers facing prolonged dry conditions can now apply for emergency grants and temporary rule waivers to protect crops and livestock.
The Welsh Government has opened applications for its Capital Production and Efficiency grant, offering funding toward water harvesting equipment, boreholes, and barn ventilation fans.
Agricultural leaders warn that extended periods without rain threaten grassland production, cut crop yields, and risk winter fodder shortages across south Wales.
Farmers enrolled in the Sustainable Farming Scheme (SFS) or holding preparatory scheme contracts can also apply for temporary rule derogations if weather conditions prevent them from meeting standard obligations.
Requests must be submitted through online RPW accounts alongside photographic evidence showing dry field conditions. Ministers stated that requests will be considered favourably and processed quickly given the conditions.
Llyr Gruffydd, minister for rural resilience and sustainability, said: “We recognise the pressures facing farmers and growers during prolonged dry weather conditions, including impacts on livestock, crops, and farm businesses.
“That’s why we want farmers to know about the support available, whether through our Capital Grants scheme, or the flexibility on offer under the Sustainable Farming Scheme.
“We’ve announced more than £1bn this Senedd term to support sustainable agriculture, and, through our Water Reform Programme, we will take full control of water in Wales, now and for future generations.”
The Welsh Government advised any farmers concerned about livestock welfare to contact a vet immediately.
