Caerphilly Castle Ladies and Girls Football Club have announced the details of their 25th football festival, which will see more than 400 women and girls compete over a fun-packed weekend.

To mark the milestone event, which will be held at St. Cenydd Leisure Centre, the club has teamed up with mental health charity Heads Above The Waves.

Coach Bethan Bushen spoke to Caerphilly Observer about the festival, which will be played across Saturday July 15 and Sunday July 16. She said: “It’s always a brilliant weekend and we’re hoping this year will be no different.

“We’re looking to sell-out every age group and have already done so for the U7s and U8s. The minis football won’t be competitive but the adult sides will play in group stages with the top sides advancing to a knockout style tournament.”

Bushen explained how the minis will play on Saturday with the U16s and ladies playing all day Sunday.

She continued: “I reached out to the charity because I really wanted to raise some awareness and give them some support.

“Some of the age groups will have bespoke kits with the charities logo on the front and 30% of ticket sales will go to the charity.”

The weekend will also cater for families, with food stores, attractions, and face painting to feature.

Bushen is also looking to get an all-female referee group to work the event, and has been in touch with the Football Association of Wales (FAW).

“The idea of being a female referee can be intimidating,” Bushen said. “I myself did a course when I was younger and I just think if the girls see a female referee in action it can act as inspiration,” she added.
