Darts players from across south Wales will be raising money for charity Help for Heroes in a tournament to celebrate Armed Forces Day.
County Conservative Club, Cardiff, is hoping to welcome up to 128 players on Saturday June 24 in support of the tournament ‘Darts for Heroes’, with £300 going to the winner.
Organiser and committee member at the club, Dafydd May, spoke to Caerphilly Observer: “We’ve held some events at the club before and been successful so they asked me to put something on for Armed Forces Day.
“It’s such a worthwhile charity that doesn’t get enough attention. We’re expecting to see lots of people and raise some money for a good cause.”
Help for Heroes is one of the biggest armed forces and veterans’ charities in the UK, and offers support to former servicemen and women.
Mr May continued: “We usually get about 60 players at normal tournaments but we’ve got players coming from all over including Gwent. There will also be ladies and some top juniors.
“I myself play darts and have had a few matches at the Aber Hotel [in Abertridwr] so I’m looking forward to seeing everyone. It has to be one of the friendliest sports you can get involved in.”
The former engineer said that he’s been hard at work preparing for the tournament, with local businesses getting involved in sponsorship. There will also be a raffle and rolling buffet.
“I’ve been quite nervous in all honestly,” said Mr May. “I’m hoping Tesco will want to help out with the buffet but either way it’ll be a great day if all goes to plan,” he added.
Entry on the day will cost £6 with the registration deadline being 11am. The tournament itself will start at 12pm.
