Ynysddu Ladies Bowls Club have come runners-up in the British Isles Series, where they represented Wales at the squad’s first ever international tournament.
The team of four “unexpectedly” took top spot at a Welsh Over 55s rinks competition last year, to book their spot in the British Isles series, where they travelled to Scotland to face the other British nations.
Team skipper Heather Collins spoke to Caerphilly Observer about the event and said: “We obviously hoped we’d do well but we didn’t think we’d go as far as we did.
“None of us were international players coming into the tournament so it was always going to be an experience.
“We beat England and Scotland in our first two games before narrowly missing out to eventual winners Ireland by four shots. It was a great match to be involved in.”
That performance in Scotland means Ynysddu Ladies have qualified for the Atlantic Seniors in Cyprus later this year, with the squad of four set to represent Wales again.
“It’s going to be amazing for all of us,” said Collins. “Unfortunately one of the players can’t make it so we’re taking a substitute, but we’re looking forward to competing.”
Playing out of Ynysddu Welfare, Collins spoke about how things are going in the league: “We’re flying this year honestly. We are top of the league and have only dropped a handful of points. The club is in great shape moving forward.”
