Seven kickboxing and karate students from Caerphilly will head across the Atlantic this month to represent Wales.

All seven students train at the WCKA club in Trecenydd Community Centre, under the guidance of Steve Bevan – a fifth degree black belt.

The WKU World Championships get underway in Calgary, Canada on October 16, with the team flying out a few days before.

The competition concludes on October 22.

Speaking to Caerphilly Observer about his team, coach Bevan said: “We train Thursdays and Fridays but of course the top athletes are training more than that.

“Unfortunately, I haven’t been that involved over the past year as I’ve been battling cancer. I’m recovering now but sadly I’m not going to be able to travel with the group.”

Bevan has been teaching in Caerphilly since 2007, however began competing himself more than 20 years ago.

Having retired two years ago, coach Bevan was asked what makes his students so good. He said: “They work very hard and everything you throw at them they just want more.

“We compete with each other regularly at the club which helps. I’m very proud of of the team. They deserve this.”

The group will compete across various fighting categories, including kickboxing, light contact, full contact, and kumite.

Bevan added: “We also have a range of pupils who attend for fun, starting from age four all the way up to 70+. It’s a great environment.”

For more information about the club and its classes, coach Bevan can be contacted on 07950 541524.
