Newport City held Risca United to a 1-1 draw, despite finishing the game with just nine men when the pair met on Saturday December 30 for the last Ardal South East match of the calendar year.
Newport, who were third coming into the game and just two points behind Risca in second, opened the scoring after 17 minutes through Kofi Rowe.
Referee Dale Randall was kept busy in the first-half, showing five yellow cards – a warning of things to come in the second.
Risca’s top scorer this season, Leon Thomas, equalised just before the break, and when goal scorer Rowe was shown a second yellow shortly after the restart, Simon Berry’s men must have fancied themselves to go on and take the three points.

The Cuckoos didn’t manage to grab a winner however after a resilient Newport display. Captain Matthew Green was sent off just before the final whistle, but there wasn’t enough time for the visitors to take advantage.
That draw leaves Risca four points behind top-of-the-table Trethomas Bluebirds, who have three games in hand over their local rivals.
Newport will be happy enough with a point, and are still in the hunt for top spot having played two games less than Risca.
