Treowen Stars have been given nearly £29,000 to improve their facilities at Bush Park
Treowen Stars have been given nearly £29,000 to improve their facilities at Bush Park in Treowen, near Newbridge

Treowen Stars FC are one of the 64 clubs across Wales set to receive grant funding to improve facilities.

The Stars are set to receive a £28,734 grant through a UK Government project, which the club intends to spend on improving the drainage system at its home ground; Bush Park, Treowen.

Caerphilly Observer broke the news to Treowen Stars, who applied for the grant in April 2023.

Club chairman Gary Evans said: “It’s a game-changing amount of money as our pitch here has been unusable for most of the members at the club due to flooding.

“We have 40 junior sides and over 400 players. Most weeks, we only manage to get the seniors out there because of the conditions. This money will get boys and girls out on the pitch.”

As part of the application, Mr Evans explained how an inspection of the facilities had to take place, where it was estimated more than £100,000 would need to be spent on completely solving the flooding issues.

“It’s obviously not all of the money which is a shame; but it’ll go a long way”, Mr Evans added.

Across Wales around £4million is being invested into clubs over the next year, in a partnership between UK Government, FAW, and Cymru Football Foundation.

Mr Evans: “We’re a community club and we’ve always been really proud of what we’ve built here. The girls’ section is going from strength-to-strength and the more we can do for homegrown players, the better.”

The men’s senior side play in the Ardal South East, the third tier of Welsh football. Mr Evans believes this money will also help them: “We have ambitions of getting into tier two, and although it has been a disappointing season so far, if and when we do get there, we should have better facilities in place.

“I believe part of this money can also be put towards fencing and equipment, which will also be a big help.”

Elsewhere in Caerphilly County Borough, Pentwynmawr Athletic were awarded £1,926 for goalposts, nets, and storage.
