An historic day for Pontymister saw them crowned Gwent County Amateur Cup champions
An historic day for Pontymister saw them crowned Gwent County Amateur Cup champions

AFC Pontymister claimed a 4-1 victory over Marshfield AFC when the pair met in Abergavenny on Saturday May 11.

Heading into the final, which was played at the Peny y Pound Stadium, Pontymister had struggled for form having lost their last five Gwent Division One league matches.

It wasn’t a dream start for the Risca-based side. Marshfield opened the scoring when Billy Evans beat the offside trap and rounded keeper Mark Mears to make it 1-0.

Moving into the second-half, Pontymister managed to draw level through a Ben Thompson own goal from a corner.

A red card for Thompson made his day worse, but Marshfield did have a chance to win it late on after being awarded a penalty.

Evans had a chance to score his second and win the cup but Mears saved brilliantly down to his right before Evans blasted the rebound over.

Extra time and Pontymister made the man advantage count. After a scramble from a corner, Warren Derraven managed to head home from close range to make it 2-1.

Stretched now, Theo Powell Evans broke before knocking the ball past a defender so Jaydn Howell Jones could make it 3-1.

With time running-out, a superb solo effort down the right from man of the match Josh Jarvis was finished well to secure the result. 4-1.

There were huge celebrations from the travelling fans, with two buses full making the trip.
